Hey all,

I may have found a solution for anyone who has been dissatisfied with
their 800Mhz though 1.42Ghz (ATI Graphics Only. The Nvidia First gen
eMacs have a GREAT Speaker system, which needs no modification.) eMac
Integrated Speakers (interference with display, small shakes in CRT,
ect)

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damages that may be done to
your Macintosh using this procedure. Any and all damages are your
fault.

I had it open replacing my hard drive, and noticed that the speakers
were NOT shielded. Having wondered why my screen shook terribly at
high volumes and bass levels, I thought I might investigate. So I got
to work figuring out how to shield them. With a good bit of time, a
metal can (Has to be of a metal that is magnetic), some aluminum foil,
and lots of masking tape, this can be done by almost anyone with
technical experience. (The Tech experience is needed for getting into
the eMac.)

First, I took the can and cut it into one inch wide strips about 2
inches long. Then, I cut 1/2 inch down into the metal to form tabs
every 1/4 inch. (These will bend towards the speaker after the
speaker magnet is wrapped. You might want to use gloves for this.
Its sharp.)

Next, Open your eMac. This is tough, and takes a lot of time. Be
careful, and use online instructions when possible. Take out the main
logic board sled also. (Makes it easier to get to the speakers.) This
may be a good time to upgrade your optical drive or HD. Use these
instructions if need be: http://www.wilko.com/emac/

After that’s done, you will notice the 2 speakers screwed to the
plastic front bezel. They are just there. No shielding or nothing.
Weird for apple to forget about such a obvious thing. Anyways, wrap
the metal around JUST the Driver (The part that sticks up in the
rear. Its gold/brass in color) Tape around it so it stays still.
Then, fold the tabs toward the center of the speaker to cover the
end. Then put a small circle of the metal on top after the tabs are
folded in to cover any other openings. Tape around that. DO NOT
cover the openings at the bottom of the speakers. The speakers will
lose almost all bass. Speakers need to breath.

Now, wrap the taped up part with aluminum foil. This helps counteract
the magnetic field inside the speaker. This doesn’t affect speaker
performance at all, and only allows it to be successfully shielded.
Again, DO NOT cover the holes on the bottom of the speaker. Wrap the
aluminum foil in masking tape, to keep from conducting electricity,
and or being use as a ground. Make sure that the aluminum foil
doesn’t touch the speaker leads, or else you will short the speaker.

Now Plug everything back in, and you will see a LARGE improvement in
screen interference. Its not perfect, but its definitely a large
improvement at high volume levels. No more screen shake!

Just thought I’d post this up here incase anyone else has had my
problem, and wants to keep the all in one look without adding
speakers.
