Greetings:

I recently acquired a broken iMac 17" 1.7/1.8 GHz G5 iMac. The
previous owner stated that the logic board is the problem. It could
be, but I am having some trouble accepting this diagnosis because I
finally got into it today and started looking around.

I would dearly love to find the actual service source on this beast,
because I think it would shed a lot of light on things, but here is
what I am looking at:

1. Once the back is off the unit, the inside power switch gets the
machine to come up to LED 3 (on the four diagnostic LEDS in the middle
of the board)... 4 never lights.

The machine will run (no chime, no boot, no LCD) and you can hear the
hard disk and DVD drive running and the fans ramp up to full speed
pretty quickly (within 4 minutes).

2. I replace the back and hit the power switch on the back and the
front white LED will come on for 1 second and the machine immediately
shuts down. (back off, runs for a while).

Again, it could be the Logic Board, but I am also suspicious of the
inverter and the power supply, because when I started the diagnosis,
the number 1 LED was kind of flashing but did not go solid until I hit
the SMU.

It seems the number 1 Diag LED goes between this slow flashing state
and solid.

There are no bad CAPS that I can see on the LB, though I did buy
replacements.

Can someone tell me definitively what I should be looking at. BTW:
With the back removed and the machine running -- the number 4 LED
*NEVER* lights... and the machine *NEVER* chimes or completely boots,
but the fans and devices do run without it shutting down.

Help is much appreciated. I also need to find a very inexpensive line
on the parts I need because I just can't see putting a bunch of money
in this unit... though it is in VERY nice condition cosmetically!

Hope someone can help.

Thanks,
