I found this:

Open terminal and enter "codesign -v /Applications/iTunes.app"
If the output of this command is anything but "Valid on disk",
uninstall iTunes and reinstall it.

which came directly from an Apple tech, apparently. That did it. There
were one or two other techniques that folks had tried, but they didn't
necessarily work.
