Under "About This Macintosh" it shows how much memory is in use. If it's mostly 
full, get more RAM. Thisis comlicated by the manual memory allocation you need 
to do in OS 9 and below; you can have a full RAM load and the system may still 
act like it's starved for RAM because you haven't allocated sufficient RAM for 
the apps.

Another reason I was SOOOO happy to put the old Mac OS in my rear-view mirror.

For running OS 9 and lower apps on modern systems go get Sheepshaver 
<http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/>. It works.
