I have here a 20" 2 GHz Intel iMac in which the internal mic used to
work, but now the only sound that comes in is a steady buzzing noise

directly or through a USB iMic but no sound at all gets in through
that. Anyone know what would cause this?
Not sure what would cause that problem. However try this: launch Audio
MIDI Setup ( Applications/Utilities/AudioMIDISetup) then in the Audio
Devices window select Built-in Microphone and confirm that the "Source"
is the Internal microphone, Format 44100.Hz 2ch-16bit and that the input
sound for 1 and 2 are not muted.
