Try launching Audio MIDI Setup (it's in the Utilities Folder). Select the appropriate input source and check the gain. For my MacBook Pro my Built-in Mic shows a gain (Volume) of 7.00 dB for both channels 1 & 2. Audio MIDI Setup is something of a second set of preferences for sound and it often gets overlooked when there are problems.
