You can also alter this setting via the terminal, by running the command:

sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.backupd-auto
StartInterval -int n

Where n is equivalent to the number of seconds between backups.

one month would be:

60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours x 30 days = Far, FAR too long to go between
backups! Seriously!

There's no reason to not have Time machine on. The first backup takes forever,
subsequent ones take almost no time. Putting long delays between backups
actually makes the problem worse, because Time Machine sees that a LOT of time
has passed and I'm pretty sure that triggers some deeper examination of things
to catch all changes. Seriously. If hourly is too long, change the value of n
in the line above to 21600 (6 hours) or 43200 (12 hours), or just switch to
Carbon Copy Cloner.

Truthfully, I use BOTH. Time Machine's great advantage over CCC is that I can
go back in time and undo changes to files; you can do this with CCC, but it's
not nearly as intuitive and easy. CCC lets you have an 'instant restore' (just
boot off your backup drive, and restore it to your main drive, or use it as a
source for Disk Utility's Restore command.)

They're complementary systems; either one lets you recover everything easily,
CCC works better on smaller drives, TM lets you roll back changes if need be.
