Basically I'm just wondering whether a 64-bit os is a big deal? My instinct is to get an intel imac as cheaply as possible, but i might change my mind if there is substantial advantage in having the c2d. Thanks much!

I believe they said Lion (10.7) will require 64 bit so a Core 2 Duo or better.

Also if you do much with Java and need Java 1.6, Apple only made that for 64 bit as well. And generally speaking, going forward, Apple is going 64 bit. So if you buy a Core Duo iMac instead of a Core 2 Duo, it will have a shorter life before you start finding you can't upgrade to the latest stuff. Unless there is a huge price difference, you might be better suited getting a Core 2 Duo based machine.
