A G3 just isn't up to full screen video playback.

My Smurf does just fine full screen.  Just need to be careful of the source.

About the only thing to try is to use hand brake and reduce the video size (width and height), by at least half.

Don't tweak the frame size. Change the codec. If you don't have a hardware MPEG-2 decoder, then transcode the source into MPEG-1. That will most certainly play - even full screen.
