What applications are currently running? Quite a few of the chat type apps will automatically get a death grip on the camera. As you would expect, only one can win at a time. For example: I had this problem with Yahoo! Messenger vs iChat vs Skype vs a web site I was viewing that had a Java applet that used the cam.
