If her mac was off at the time it was sent, it's a forged email.

If it was sent via her gmail account, then her gmail account may have been 
hacked, especially if it went to everyone in her mailing list.

It's extremely unlikely that her mac was involved at all.

To determine what happened, I would need to see the full headers of the suspect 
email. I'd need to see the full source of the entire email to see if any virus 
was attached, but I'll wager not, this is garden-variety spam, from the looks 
of it.

And it's not much of a scam, if they're selling an iPad 2 for about $100 
off...:-/
