Oh man, thank you guys so much for this info! I'm going to try Applejack right after I'm finished here. Dan, you're right, I was trying things that the tech at the local mac sellers said to do, (she said repair permissions, and reinstall the OS, and that if that didn't work, I'd need to bring it to them for deeper diagnostics).
Okay, now I'm going to try pasting a few snippets from Console, in hopes it will tell us something useful (not sure which exact things to select, but hope some of this is okay): 6/26/12 Jun 26, 20128:23 PM [0x0-0x2db2db].com.apple.iPhoto[13400] Tue Jun 26 20:23:30 catherine-torellis-computer.local iPhoto[13400] <Error>: The function `CGDataProviderAccessSessionEnd' is obsolete and will be removed in an upcoming update. Unfortunately, this application, or a library it uses, is using this obsolete function, and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system performance. (hey cool, it works! Okay, that's probably enough, and maybe some of this isn't as ominous as it looks to non-Tech me. Does any of this tell us anything useful?
