I would check drive jumper settings. I have a non-Apple drive in both my Powermac G4/400 and Powermac G5 and both see the drive in disk utility and such. While neither are an iMac I don't see how the firmware between the iMac and Powermac can be that much different in that a 3rd party optical drive won't work.
