Before tossin' in da towel, you might try finding out whether (or not) these very kind folkx have a fix for your optical drive (iirc- is a Lite-On brand), and just may be what they consider compatible with OSX or perhaps even Nix Kernal..wise)...

It doesn't appear that I'll be able to change it to see DVD-ROM drives. Unless someone has another idea, it looks like I'm at the end of the road on this issue.
