There's no such thing as 'rebuilding the desktop' in OS X, that was strictly a classic Mac OS thing. The Finder does get messed up if you have too many files on the desktop, but it's on the order of thousands of items. (believe it or not, I once had a professor manage to hit this limit, and on a 15" Macbook pro. I have NO idea how he ever found anything, some icons were stacked 10 and 15 deep.
