Hi iMac folks,

I'm thinking this topic must have come up long ago,
wondering if there are any current clues / methods ?

Recently, my 2007 iMac wouldn't boot ...
the Seagate Barracuda 750GB was clicking ...
The disk seemed to be dead ...

I replaced the hard disk with a new, larger WD disk.

When I boot off DVD, the iMac won't recognise this disk -
diskutil shows the name, but says it is 0 bytes and
      won't allow format (greyed out).

The disk is a faster SATA III disk, so I tried jumpers, to slow
it down to SATA II - 3GB/sec (so the limited documentation said).

I bought a USB dock, mounted the new WD drive in that,
booted from DVD, but the iMac wouldn't see the disk at all.

Any ideas where to go from here ?

Do I have to try to buy the same / similar
Seagate Barracuda hard disk (which one) ?

Or, is there something else I can try ?

(I'd like to try format the new disk, but my laptop's usb ports
don't work any more - only recognise a backup disk ... sigh)

Any clues welcome :-)

Regards Geoff U in Australia
