You're getting HTTPS errors because the SSL/TLS standards have advanced, and 
the older ones are no longer supported for security reasons.

You could install MacPorts and the curl and openssl packages to allow 
command-line downloading, but I don't see you getting a usable web browsing 
experience out of this machine.  On the other hand, it would work fine for 
running PPC-only and non-Carbon classic applications (such as many games), so 
perhaps you could find someone interested in that.
