Reviving this thread, as Django-1.0 will ship in September with an optional PIL dependency. Plone has long had a hard dependency on PIL. Both Django and Plone work fine with PILwoTk, so if a similarly packaged PIL were uploaded to PyPI, it would be helpful for users and packagers of these frameworks.
