Hi Suzanne,
you can find an ij.jar for 1.53v here:
https://wsr.imagej.net/jars/
rename it to "ij.jar" and place it into the ImageJ directory.
MacOs is an exception: Right-click ImageJ to open the package contents.
The ij.jar file is in Contents/Resources/Java.
