Exactly right. We are currently testing LYRIS which does pretty much anything you can dream of. Actually, it has a real nice error auto-management module built-in taking care of invalid e-mail addresses which should fit your needs. Plus it is supposed to work with iMAIL. My tech people have run into some trouble though, trying to set up POP mailboxes under iMAIL and list-mailboxes under LYRIS within the same domain.
