ETRN
ETRN (Extended TuRN) is an RFC solution for that situation. Works best if
he has a dedicated connection but if he had one he would probably not be
using your server, without the dedi-line you need some rubber ducks (such as
timed macros or scripts) or a third party rubber duck (such as a smart-POP
client).
To do ETRN with a dial up-
@ Your end do:
Make DNS entries to make his IP/Mail server the primary mail server an yours
the secondary example next 4 lines:
domain.com IN MX 10 <DNS A Record Name for his mail server>
like:
guywithexchange.com IN MX mailsrv.guywithexchange.com
domain.com IN MX 20 <DNS A Record Name for your mail server>
like:
guywithexchange.com IN MX mail.norlink.net
Put entries in your hosts file for [<his mail server name> <his IP address>]
Put his static mail server IP address in your "relay for" list (control
panel-IMAIL-SMTP Security)
@ His end do:
Set up a script or windows macro to do the following in the following order
at a regular interval (like every 1/2 hour during day and every two hours at
night?):
Connect to ISP via dial-up networking.
Start a telnet client.
Connect the telnet client to <your mail server> like "mail.domain.com 25"
without the quotes.
Type (or macro-send) the ETRN command via telnet app to your mail server
"ETRN guywithexchange.com"
wait for mail to be de-spooled to his server, send any queued mail from his
server hang around for a few minutes and disconnect.
Then tell him nothing about how you did it and begin to raise his rates
every month! :->
