Problems started when I deleted all messages via web. after that, OE5 POP3 was not dowloading messages, but, more importantly, OE4 was deleting them without downloading, even though both were configured to leave a copy on the server. This was only happening with the main boxe, OE was working normaly with the sub-boxes. Restarting the server and/or services did not help. OE IMAP4 and Netscape POP3 was working fine on the main box. Finally, I tried to delete one message via the web Interface, and everything was back to normal. Apperently, there was something stuck the last time I deleted all messages via web. This is very dangerous since OE4 was deleting the messages without me knowing there was any. I will raise the issue to support.
