These are the two things I would try first though:
Try going to Control Panel | IMail Server | Global | Virtual Host Admin
Then click on the IP address. Change the user database to IMail and click
save. Then change it back to external database and click save. Then click
on configure. In the DSN field set the DSN to
dsn_name;UID=username;PWD=password where username and password is valid
login information for SQL. You must have a password, null passwords will
not work.
In the System DSN settings what type of authentication are you using? Try
changing to NT and run the IMail services as user that has access to the SQL
machine.
