If you are checking mail on a LAN versus dial-up you may also want to lower
the time Outlook waits between checking messages. We set ours to 2 minutes.
I beleive the default Outlook setting is 10. It may be that the program
hasn't cycled yet and looked for new mail.

sound assigned to "Mail Notification". I use outlook and it works for me.
