No advice specific to the CAUSE, but we use Enterprise Monitor here
(www.mediahouse.com). We have it setup to watch critical NT services -- the
latest version will auto-restart a stopped service. It was a life saver in
the ColdFusion 3.x days - the damn thing would DRWTSN all of the time. You
have to turn off the DRWTSN visual alert dialog (you can turn off the dump
too if you want) so doc just shuts down the service.

We have EM set to poll critical services every 5 minutes and restart them
immediately after the first detection that they are not running. I know that
a recommendation is that the similar feature to monitor IWEBMSG within IMAIL
be disabled. The nice thing about EM is that it runs as a service,
preferably on a separate machine. It can control services on any machine
that it's login account is a member of an administrative group on. One
catch -- the service has to STOP (shows as not running in control panel). If
the service stalls (stops responding), but is still STARTED in control
panel, EM won't STOP then RESTART. I bet the next release will have that
pegged.

I know 5 minutes is a lifetime to a user trying to logon to mail. You could
set it for 1 minute intervals, though that may cause a problem with doc
taking more than a minute to do his deed. During that time, the service is
not running, but would also not respond to a start request. You'd have to
play with the time settings. Maybe 2 minutes...

Anyway, I know it's still a problem that needs to be resolved withing
IWEBMSG itself, but perhaps this is a way for you to at least keep the thing
up as long as possible without having to babysit it.

PS - Sorry, Ipswitch. I know you guys sell What's Up, but frankly (as I've
told engineering many times) What's Up just doesn't compare to EM ;-(
