I create the directories programmatically as well to save any hassles that
*might* result from not having a directory. As of yet iMail seems pretty
smart is this area. I tested it a bit before I made that portion of the
app, but decided to create them on the fly anyway. One less thing to worry
about ;-)

It depends. Since you also wrote an app to deal with IMail, I recommend
you to go ahead and create the user directories also. One problem that I
found is trying to setup a forward e-mail address for an existing account
using 8181 or 8383: if you haven't created the user directory, IMail will
not save the change. If you do this using IMail Administrator, of course, it
will create the directory for you.
So I'm now creating all directories programatically.
