Forgot one thing...this works, if you can afford to setup a second server.
 
Another solution would be to relay mail out through a different server.  For example, setup smtp.domain.com as outgoing and pop3.domain.com as incoming mail. 
 
This way the SMTP server will always accept the messages, then if the local domain address doesn't exist as it forwards to the pop3 box, then the SMTP server will generate a bounce back to the user.

How can i get Imail to process mail going to a local address even if it is not going to a real user (LOCAL ONLY), (IE: i send to jo@LOCALHOST, and there is no jo@LOCALHOST, so Imail would send a postmaster message back to me)
 
right know under a default install, Imail will not even let the message go out of your outbox if you have an incorrect e-mail address in your TO: field (again ONLY LOCAL addresses)
