This is actually okay, as it still requires that the user be dialed into one
of your local NASes (and thus have an account, no?) to gain access to SMTP
services. This covers most of the bases, as it allows the user to use any
return address he wants (for instance, he may prefer to have replies go to a
Hotmail address) while still requiring him to be one of your customers.
However, if the same user dials into another ISP, he is out of luck, and so
is anyone else who does not have an IP address assigned from your pool.
Some folks are using authentication for SMTP as well as POP3 now, but are
not considering using it at this time. We have too many users who would
have to switch to new software - something that always frightens our support
people. <g>
