I have been considering adding Mail Essentials to my Imail server
which supplies PGP server processing and virus scanning with any
Norton or McAfee setup. In a recent marketing survey of email users
the single biggest feature ISPs could supply to their users was
virus scanning of email. In fact they were willing to pay more for
such a feature. There has been millions in damage done by email
viruses and it has also been widely published lately thae Hotmail
running on FreeBSD is not speading over 60% over 60% of the worlds
computer viruses. Mail Essentials uses a simple interface that
uses a cheap Norton or McAfee command line interface to scan
email attachments for viruses. This would be the most important
step Ipswitch could take in adding value to Imail at this time and
it could be done at minimal investment in time.'
Mail Essentials scans not only the attachments but then scans the
Norton log to see if a virus was then found before determining
what to do with the attachment and what notices to hand out.
If Ipswitch doesn't do this, then I will probably go ahead with my
purchase of Mail Essentials. If I could tell my potential customers
that all their attachments are scanned by Norton AntiVirus or McAfee
then that is of tremendous value to me.

BTW, currently convential Norton PC AntiVirus ($90)does detect
viruses if they are attachments in the spool being transferred using
web based email.
