Thanks for the help. I gave this a try, but it doesn't seem to work.
We have IMail running on one server, and MS's SMTP service running on a
second server as part of the IIS4 package (This is the server that hosts web
site). I created a remote domain under the SMTP Site node in the MMC, and
set its option box to accept relays. Then I set the Smart Host line (in the
SMTP Site Properties box/Deliveries tab) to either the IP address of the FQDN
of the IMail mail server.
Attempts to run with this configuration result in the message in the
mailroot/badmail directory. It appears to happen very quickly. That is, we
have a test ASP page that sends mail, and using that page results in a
message immediately in the badmail folder.
I'm convinced this should work, but MS's documentation stinks. So what am I
missing that causes all the ASP-sent messages to be sent to the badmail
directory. Any help given is appreicated.

Ben, I have it all working...
Make sure to do the following:
1. Create a new domain of your imail server under the smtp server in
the management console.
2. Set it as "remote" and check "allow incoming mail to be relayed to this
domain".
3. Under the Delivery tab of the SMTP server properties, enter your imail
server's IP address between brackets - [1.2.3.4] - in the Smart host field.
All mail we now be sent to your imail server. You can check the Queue and
other folders under INetPub\mailroot to see if anything is going out. Also
look at the queue on your imail server.
