We started with  RFC 2554 - SMTP Service Extension for
Authentication and RFC 2222 - Simple Authentication and
Security Layer (SASL). Tested with Paladin (CRAM-MD5), OE
and NS that I remember. There were others, but I don't
remember what they all were.
