True.  In the meantime, setting up a second email address only for
subscription purposes is a good idea for those that have that option.

I'd  view  getting  hundreds  of "read receipts" as a gentle reminder to
disable the request when sending to mailing lists.

What  mailing  list software really needs is an option to send a receipt
to  the  submitter  but strip the request when forwarding it to the list
participants.
