In an account with lots of email, the "leave a copy on the server" can cause mucho headaches. The file that keeps track of which messages have been downloaded can get corrupted easily on large mailboxes and you end up downloading another copy of every message in the box. Solution: IMAP (as long as you are up to date on patches and are not running a vulnerable version of IMAIL).
