The issue with SMTP Auth is not anything that's broken.  It's that
SmarterMail does not pass SMTP Auth info to spam filtering plug-ins, so you
can bypass filtering for users that Auth.  That's a very important feature
for many of us, due to the stringency of our spam tests....thus we've waited
for 3.0.

That's exactly why we did not port mxGuard to SmarterMail yet. I talked to them early on and they thought 'that was an interesting feature'.

Running spam tests for local authenticated users (the bulk of the traffic) just doesn't make sense. As soon as they enhance their product, we will release an mxGuard for SmarterMail :)
