Last November we started having significant performance problems with SMTP.
POP seemed to work OK, but SMTP performance was really bad at times.
Ipswitch recommended that we reinstall everything. We bought a new server
and reinstalled. Everything was working fine until this week. The same issue
came up.

When this happened before, I noticed the processor queue length was running
above the recommended level of two. The processor queue length was running
between four and five yesterday. I called and talked with Ipswitch and while
I were trying to figure out what was going on, I cleared the security log in
the event viewer. Performance improved significantly and the processor queue
length dropped. The event log had authentication and many auditing records
for the SAM database. I reduced the maximum size of the security log and
disabled auditing on file and object access and things seem to be running
fine.

I'm not sure if the auditing is causing this problem or if the log file size
is or if something else is. But, one thing that is clear is clearing the
security log brought the system back up to speed on two separate occasions.
If you see this type of thing, give this a try.
