Not exactly. An IMAP daemon must be optimized for more than just disk I/O; it can be very CPU- and memory-intensive on its own. Nonetheless, while it wouldn't be my choice for performance reasons, as you point out, it is the choice of the wildly popular SquirrelMail as well as most other portable webmail solutions. Some webmail that comes bundled with mail suites lets you use a proprietary interface if the mailboxes are on the same server, moving (downgrading?) to IMAP as your API if you want to scale out your architecture. Others fix you to a non-standard API for both single-server and distributed systems, like Outlook Web Access, which can be lightning-fast if outfitted properly, but which has its. . . ahem. . . detractors. I agree that defaulting to IMAP on the local box is a one-two hit, no matter how you look at it. The better the IMAP daemon, the less you'll feel it, but it'll be there. It's not a novice choice by any means -- but it may be too standard for its own good. --Sandy ------------------------------------ Sanford Whiteman, Chief Technologist Broadleaf Systems, a division of Cypress Integrated Systems, Inc. e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] SpamAssassin plugs into Declude! http://www.imprimia.com/products/software/freeutils/SPAMC32/download/release/ Defuse Dictionary Attacks: Turn Exchange or IMail mailboxes into IMail Aliases! http://www.imprimia.com/products/software/freeutils/exchange2aliases/download/release/ http://www.imprimia.com/products/software/freeutils/ldap2aliases/download/release/ To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/ Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/
