Using various telnet clients (even the client from MS, plus putty, SecureCRT, Linux/FreeBSD, TeraTerm/SSH) to talk to a lot of different SMTP services over the years, I've never seen this problem. So it doesn't exist! :)

I suggest you play with your telnet client's config or try another client. Your telnet client's behavior probably has something to do with the echo setting, which, ime, just works in default mode in all the above clients.

You type a character, your emulator:

1) will send it to the SMTP service and

2) should display it on your local screen, because, as Rod said, the character won't echoed back from the SMTP service (but it normally will be by a _telnet_ server in character echo mode, where what you see on your screen actually went from-your-kbd to-server echo-to-your-screen)
