Agreed.  Any backup of Imail without the registry is just a copy of mailbox files.

You will need to start from scratch and work your way up to what you had.

1.     Install Imail.  Turn off all services.  Yep, mail will bounce, but it is necessary in order to make sure you don’t have to merge accounts all day long.

2.     Create User Account with new passwords (big headache).  If you were using anything but the database storage for users you will need to do this by hand.  You can use  te user directories to create these one by one for reference.

3.     Copy the user folder into the place where the new one resides.

4.     Turn on services and hope for the best.

5.     Long process but it will work eventually.  Hope you don’t have too many users.

Also, is there *any* chance that you spoke with Imail support about your install in the past.  The reason I ask is that sometimes Ipswitch asks for a copy of your registry hive to look at to make sure there is nothing wrong with it.  If you have done this, perhaps you have a copy in your sent items and don’t realize it.  Or perhaps you can call Ipswitch and see if they keep a history of the support case.

Later,

Travis

Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] Restoring imail without a backup of the registry key

Hi Jim,

I think your are sitting now in deep s....

The data stored in the registry is the heart of IMail. Everything, really everything is stored there: Data about Domains, Users and the general

Setup.

I think, without a backup of the registry, you're complete lost. There is no way to restore the data in any way.

When we set up our new backup system a few months ago, we set it up to back up the imail directory every day but we neglected to backup the registry in any way.

Our mail server went down yesterday and there is a good chance we will need to re-install the operating system.  We can easily install imail and then copy in the backed-up imail directory.  But, from what I can tell, the registry is actually the most important part when moving a backed-up copy of imail onto a new hard drive.

Is there some way to restore imail without a copy of the registry key?

If not, is there at least a way to go into our backed-up imail directory and get lists of all the domains and users and such?  That way we can install imail, then manually set up all the domains and users and everything (thus re-building the imail registry) and then copy in our backed-up directory?
