We are providing a customer a /27 block of IP addresses for his
network and in turn we are also providing the reverse DNS records
for these IPs. It was my understanding that best practice would be
to build reverse records for these as host records are added by the customer.
correct
However, the customer wants generic reverse records built for
each ip in the following format, where 1-2-3-4.custdomain.com is
not actually a valid (A) record:
1.2.3.4.in-addr.arpa PTR 1-2-3-4.custdomain.com
put two A records for each IP. One A record is for his
www.domain.com. A a.b.c.d
and another A record that matches the PTr
1-2-3-4.custdomain.com. A a.b.c.d ; same IP as above
My question is this. What is the recommended practice regarding
reverse records without a valid host (A) record?
for MTAs, that's the worst practice. In fact, all public servers
should have matching PTR and A records as best practice.
