pointing an A record for webmail.yourcustomer.com to mail.yourmailserver.com works just fine.

I thought of that. Only problem is that I'm using host header name to make
it a virtual site in IIS. I'd have to give up an IP address for webmail to
make that work. Is it worth devoting an IP address?

Subject: RE: [IMail Forum] DNS confusion...

I just used CNAME for the first time ever. Here was my rationale:

I have the new IMail webmail interface at
<http://mail.robintek.com>http://mail.robintek.com
I setup a DNS for a new customer and wanted them to have easy access
to webmail without having to go to my url so I added the following to
their DNS file:

webmail IN CNAME mail.robintek.com.

that's legal, but it does require the 2 DNS queries instead of one.

You can just as easily do this in their domain:

webmail.theirdomain.com A ip.ad.re.ss

... avoiding the CNAME.

And what shows up on the web mail client's browser when aliased to your
domain? your domain, right? Wouldn't it be better if their domain was in
the browser address field?
