Remember when evaluating disk queue lengths, to take into account the
number of drive spindles (assuming your running some sort of RAID array).

I think I'd also run perfmon and check the Disk Queue length for
at least a few hours, under typical load, if possible. If you see
anything above 2 for anything other than short periods (a few
seconds or less), it might indicate something in the HD system is
not optimal.
Yea, checkdisk can take a while, but the only real way to be sure
a HD is in good shape and repair it if not. I expect things will
be OK, but have to be sure!
Is this a new computer? Are you sure all drivers are the latest &
greatest? Video & NIC are the first I'd check...
HTH!

Hey Daniel,
No, we are not running the IMonitor service. We stopped that
when we setup
What's Up.
We have not noticed a slowing in the services at this point, but
are now
doing the netstat every 10 minutes and a couple of other things
to try to
get more logging on why this is happening. It happened around
4:30 last
night and then at 4:47 this morning... Might be a week or so
until it
happens again now...
Another guy here did run the Shields Up and only found a few
ports
assessable from the outside world. We also run a Barracuda in
front of the
Imail server to stop allot of the junk from hitting our Imail
server, but we
still might be being hit by people bypassing it.
As far as the chkdsk goes, I will have that scheduled to run next
time it is
re-booted... I hate doing that as it takes so long... The disk
is not
defragged too bad though, I do know that.

Grant,
Are you running the IMonitor service? I'd suggest not, especially
if WU is also monitoring things.
Are there any other symptoms before things just stop (like slower
response)?
It is quite unusual that a simple restart of services does not
work (this should close all the open connections). To me that
implies something more system related. I'd suggest running CHKDSK
/F as a start and any other system diagnostics that you can lay
your hands on (memory test, at least!)
The netstat suggestion is also a good one to be sure that
connections are not left open, using up the 5000 or so, Windows
allows by default. There are Windows configurations mentioned on
this list in the past than can help if this is the problem.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Server Issues
Hello All,
We have been having an issue with our Imail server for the past
few months
and I am not able to find out what might be going on. Below is
the server
setup.
Windows 2003 Server running Imail 8.22 with all hot fixes and
everything.
Dual Pent 3.06GHz Proc
4 GB RAM
For some reason about every 7 days on average the server will
lock-up and we
will have to power it off manually and restart it. I have had a
few
instances where it has created a Dr Watson error and I upload the
memory
dump to Micro$oft, but never hear anything back. Anyway, I have
looked thru
the Event Logs and all Imail logs and can not find anything
showing any type
of errors. I even used the Imail Log Analyzer and it does not
show anything
unusual that I can find.
We do use What's Up Pro to monitor the server and it reports the
issue to
us, but I need to know why it is occurring to get it resolved.
Anyone know
of any other logs I might be able to look at to get a clue as to
why things
suddenly shut-down? It is weird as I can usually still ping the
server, but
Imail is dead in the water. This happened last night and I tried
restarting
the Imail services, but it ended up just hanging the server when
they tried
to restart.
Thanks,
Grant Griffith
