The only flaw I see with using an ordinary user account is that whomever logs in can do pretty much anything. IMail and IMAP support a Public mailbox, that may be more of what is needed. Only the public user can change the contents, but other users can view its contents....
If you use IMAP, you can easily sort your messages into folders, like yearly or monthly. More mailboxes (actually sub-mailboxes) but fewer messages in any single mailbox file. I have an account with 5-6K messages that I use every day without trouble. I heard one of the development guys showed a beta IMail 2006.03 with a 1 Gb mailbox and that worked well (using web client, too!). So I think 15k messages is probably not a big issue (but test of course!). Hoping someone might have some thoughts. We have been exploring different applications for a searchable ListServe archive, and I haven't found one that will meet my main need - to accept the thousands of messages we already have in our current archive (currently running on an Exchange server). There are some great solutions out there that would work for a new setup, but with trying to incorporate our existing messages is usually the show stopper. I think someone mentioned a while back that we should just use IMAP, move the messages over to an account on the Imail server, and then search that "account" as our archive. My questions are: is this a viable solution? If so, how many messages can an account hold without bringing down an entire system. At the present I believe there are about 15,000 messages in the archive (from the past several years), some with attachments. We have occasional users of the web interface but most all of them use a mail client to get their messages. I played around with IMAP and got a test account set up, and was able to move messages over. However, when I log into the account via the web, I can't pull up attachments (actually, the attachments are messed up on all of the accounts if you view via the website). So that worries me a little bit. The archive will probably be used several times a day, but it's not something that is consistently hit. We are on 8.22 (no plans to move for a while), running on a P3 866MHz with 2GB of memory and Windows 2000. Has anyone else done anything like this? If so, are you available for hire, either for consultation or programming? Thanks! Todd ______________________________________________ Todd Richards National Network, Inc.
