I understand that it is unreasonable to expect IMail's listserver to match
up with stand-alone professional products. However, there are a lot of us
who have only modest needs for a list server. For us, the IMail list server
does reasonable, except it could use a little tweaking. I just found it
strange that it could stay virtually unchanged since IMail V.4. Hence, my
comparison to the AM radio with one speaker; even the cheapest of modern
cars have FM and stereo.

No, it's like buying a word processor and expecting it to be a
full-function
web publishing editor. Or like expecting the "export to html" feature
common in most pc applications today to be the only thing you need to
publish to the web.
Although list servers and email servers both process emails, they are so
different in features and capability that they really don't belong in a
single product.
This is exemplified by all the good email programs having lousy list
servers
and all the good list servers (thankfully) not even trying to be email
servers.
We opted to go with Lyris (expensive but excellent commercial software);
there are also some good opensource list servers available. Either way, if
you needs do grow beyond "basic", it's best to adopt a specialized
solution.
Everything else aside, it's great for us to run our list server on a
physical server that is completely independent of our mailbox/smtp server
for reliability and isolation.

Amazing. It's like buying a new Lexus hybrid and then discovering it only
has an AM radio with one in-dash speaker.
