Yes (and no extra SMTP servers are necessary).

Instead   of  using  the  IMail  "send  to  gateway"  feature,  use  a
lightweight  "fake-root"  DNS,  something  I used to do in my sendmail
days.  Use  BIND,  MS  DNS,  SimpleDNS, or likely any other vendor. In
quick summary: a fake-root DNS believes itself to be authoritative for
the  DNS  root  (.);  a  wildcard  MX record set on *. is then used to
direct all MX lookups through the same remote gateway(s).

There  are  other  elements  to  manage  when using this setup, but by
taking  the  IMail's  mutually exclusive gateway and peering functions
out of contention, you solve your problem, and you have the additional
benefit   of   being  able  to  use  the  DNS  MX  algorithm  to  have
primary/secondary or load-balanced outbound mailrouting.
