ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.5.12.253
This causes any packets destined to an unknown network to go to the 10.5.12.253 internet router.

This is exactly the way I have this set up. This setup works great as long as the DNS server at my main site here has internet access. Remote sites still use their own internet connection which runs thru their own firewall but they are using the DNS server at my site.

I had thought that putting the ISP's dns server as the alternate would take care of this but it didnt, at least not on the workstations.
