My experience with Hotmail/MSN has been no less than
bizaare. I've been going back and forth with their tech support for almost three
weeks now and still have not resolved the issue. They use Symantec
Brightmail for filtering spam. They will not tell us what email from
our servers failed the spam tests or why it failed. The folks at Symantec
tell us that Hotmail/MSN is blocking our IP address and we have to contact
them. Every time I contact Hotmail/MSN I get some canned response.
This is really just plain bizaare.
We've resorted to advising our customers that we cannot
guarantee delivery of email to any Hotmail/MSN account. We're encouraging anyone
who has subscribed to our services to abandon Hotmail/MSN and many have done
so.
At least AOL gave us a mechanism to prove we're a legitmate
email provider. Hotmail/MSN is being extremely irresponsible by passing
the buck. They advised us that we could bypass their filters by
subscribing to the safesenders.com service. I don't know about the rest of
you but this feels like extortion to me. They won't tell me what we're
doing wrong and want me to pay money so that my users can send email to
Hotmail/MSN.
What
we should all do is start blocking Hotmail/MSN until they change this
unfair practice.

Mail from Hotmail --------------------------------- We have
identified that emails from your IP 62.175.224.16 is being filtered based on the
recommendations of the Symantec Brightmail filter.
The only way
to stop this process is to contact Symantec and have them remove the
recommendation that your IP be filtered. If you wish to not be filtered by
Symantec you must work with Symantec, and not MSN Hotmail. The
instructions to do this are below. Please follow these instructions as
closely as possible as any deviation will result in delays in resolving your
filtering issue. To do this,
please send an e-mail message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
After you've
sent the identified messages to them, please immediately follow with another
message which specifies the Subject lines of the messages sent and your contact
information to enable them to follow up with you. Their team will open the
submission and render a judgment, or possibly request additional information. Do
not send Symantec a list of blocked IPs as they are not actually blocking the
IPs and such information will not help them to resolve your
issue. Gary Jorgenson escribió: Is anyone else having problems being blocked by Hotmail? We finally heard back from the Hotmail support staff telling us that we are being blocked because they use Symantec Brightmail and that Symantec is flagging our email as spam. The Hotmail guy said there is nothing he can do and that we have to contact Symantec. We contacted Symantec and they said that there's nothing they can do. We have to get Hotmail to stop blocking our IP. Here's his email: Hotmail, at its discretion, temporarily blocks an IP if our software tags high percentage of mails from the IP as spam. This IP block is what you are experiencing. You may want to restrict or completely eliminate automatic forwarding of mails to Hotmail/MSN. When your end-users are allowed to forward all mails (spam and legitimate) to Hotmail, your mailservers may look like sources of spam when that really isn't the case. There isn't much we can do on our end in this kind of situation. Our software is rendering verdict on individual messages. We have no control over Hotmail's IP block list except to stop tagging messages as spam (and even in this scenario, it would still take time for the block to expire automatically). Based on his message it sounds like you can get blacklisted just by running a listserve. The guy didn't give any more information on why we're being flagged as spammers.
