This is why MTA's keep activity logs.

Have  the  "certain  customer" ask his postmaster for the log details of his
mail submission.

If that log claims it got a successful response from your MTA then check
your logs around that timeframe to see what happened.

They claimed to have sent me an attachment at 10:18am. When checking my
logs, I don't see any exchange between their mail server & mine.
