We do it with Postfix on a Linux box. That also lets us put ASSP in
front of it which although I've heard some grumbling here about it is a
great antispam frontend. This postfix/ASSP frontend sits in front of our
Imail box and also in front of our Exchange box. We've even used it to
control major spam bombs against a few of our customers on occasion by
temporarily redirecting their MX records to us until the bomb subsides.

The other day I got an email from a user complaining about the huge
increase in spam messages he was getting. I started looking into it and
didn't see any issues. I called him back and asked for more information.
He was all grouchy because he had gotten 3 spams. Stifling my laughter I
politely told him I'd review the system further and ended the call.

Needless to say I'm very happy with the Postfix/ASSP solution. The newer
versions of ASSP even implement delaying and that cuts the load on the
frontend server hugely (you can turn it off or reduce the delay time if
it's causing you any headaches).

Subject: [IMail Forum] Backup server...

We provide backup email service for a few of our clients for their
exchange
servers but with the great increase in SPAM we have found that we are
sometimes bouncing messages to innocent third parties. I want to use a
list
of authorized users for the servers that we spool for so we can reject
mail
that is to a non-existant user. How would I integrate a list of valid
email
addresses into Imail for a mail domain that we do not host but only do
backup spooling for?
