It means it was locked and something happened and it was never unlocked.  For the files stranded in the proc folder you can remove those as they will not be processed unless there is a matching Q/D file.

Can anybody tell me what an e-mail sitting in the spool\proc folder with a .sm$ means? Its about a month old. Which brings to my next question, I have two other e-mails that I guess are never going to get delivered, both are 2 or 3 weeks old sitting in the proc folder. Should I delete those, all other e-mail has todays date.
