Alright. After reading the 2006 release notes, it sounds like there are
no new columns added to the database between 8.05 and 9.04. It seems as
if the primary reason for my troubles is that I did not make the
permissions changes outlined here:

http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-20051206-DM07.htm

Is it really necessary to do all of this to make external databases
work? If I don't have a domain in place between my Imail and SQL server
can I get by with duplicate usernames and passwords on both systems? Has
anybody tried this in a non-domain environment?

You can also run the dbupdate utility to add the columns.
